“She-Hulk” smashes the Marvel scene

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is a well known franchise that has grown significantly since its inception in 2008. As it has evolved over the years, new projects have become more ambitious and creative by incorporating unique styles of storytelling and cinematography. This has been especially true for the past two years with Marvel switching from their usual blockbuster films, to a limited series format that breaks down these heavy action packed storylines into six to ten episodes.
While many fans were originally skeptical of the concept of TV shows that tie into the MCU, these shows have received an exceptional amount of applause and recognition. This new format has allowed the MCU to delve deeper into their characters and bring more of their beloved heroes from the pages and onto the silver screen. From the mind bending world of “WandaVision,” to the mythical world of “Moon Knight,” each show tells a deep story ranging from topics like grief and mental illness to identity and redemption.

However, perhaps the most recent production that Marvel has created has been one of their most distinctive ones in a long time.
“She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” began streaming on Aug. 18, 2022. The story follows Jennifer Walters, a successful attorney in L.A. who happens to be the cousin of Bruce Banner, better known as the Hulk. After a freak accident where Banner’s blood spills into Walters’ open wound, the highly toxic gamma radiation takes over her system and she becomes She-Hulk. The show follows Walters’ journey as she adjusts to her new normal of being a hulk, all while balancing her career as an attorney.
The series is comical and follows the same superhero arc that most MCU shows and movies use. We’re introduced to our hero, Walters, see her superhero origin story and are given hints of a surrounding sinister force. However, there are two ways in which She-Hulk breaks the mold of other MCU projects. For starters, the writers focus on the parts of her life that have changed and have caused Walters to learn how to readjust. It focuses on even the mundane tasks of life like going to a high school friend’s wedding, dealing with a demanding boss and navigating through online dating. Unlike with most MCU characters, we are allowed to see more of Walters’ life and see her personality shine through.
She-Hulk breaks the mold by using a very interesting choice of storytelling. “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” likes to play with breaking the fourth wall. Throughout the show, Walters actively looks into the camera and speaks directly to the audience. It is a fun writing choice that is seen in other popular shows like “Fleabag” and “The Office.”
This choice allows the audience to connect more with the main character and get a better understanding of who their heroine is. Through her dialogue with other characters and with us, we are able to see her delightful, quick-witted humor mixed with her sharp intelligence. Walters makes comments about her surrounding situation to us the viewers, so we understand how she feels and which is rare with characters in TV and film. Often the audience assumes how the character feels regarding a situation through body language, actions or dialogue allowing the audience to sympathize with Walters. I personally think that this is a brilliant idea that adds to the humor of the show.
Besides the series’ format, the theme really makes it stand out to so many people. “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” is the fifth out of 37 MCU shows and films that features a strong female lead. While there have been plenty of past female characters in the MCU, it is entirely different when the story revolves around a strong heroine allowing little girls to look up to a woman who is strong and tough, but also remarkably intelligent and hardworking. She-Hulk not only serves as an inspiration as a superhero, but just as a simple attorney. In a male dominated field like law, she perseveres and is successful. It can be incredibly important for girls to see that they can do whatever they wish so long as they put in the hard work and do not let anyone tell them they cannot do something.
