According to a recent poll, 71% of Rose students believe that the new schedule change is overall negative. This schedule includes a shorter time period allotted to Refresh, lunch splitting up third period classes, and an entirely new bell schedule.

The old schedule consisted of Refresh being between second and third period. Refresh had three blocks, requiring one block to be a lunch period. Now, the schedule is built around lunch being in third period, with there only being two refresh blocks for students to choose from in between third and fourth period.

Junior football player and wrestler Jaelen Roberts believes the new schedule has a negative impact on his time management for classes.

“It’s honestly overall pretty stressful and just feels pretty rushed throughout the day,” Roberts said. “I have barely any time to do work; I only have 50 minutes to complete work for 4 classes.”

Roberts has not only struggled with managing his academics, but also with extracurriculars.

“I couldn't go to a Dream Team meeting because I had to go to film,” Roberts said. “It's hard for me to participate in clubs knowing I have to go to football films and go to academic sessions during Refresh.”

Key Club advisor and Math 2 teacher Molly Chandler encourages all students to use this schedule change as a chance to see where their priorities lie.

“I think students are going to have to reevaluate how many clubs they do and what clubs are meaningful to them,” Chandler said.

Students who are a part of many extracurricular activities may have to resort to alternative ways to participate in clubs.

“I think that overall we may just have to start adjusting to having to push things to after school,” Chandler said. “I'm hoping that it won't mess with numbers at all, just with balancing other clubs.”

With this change, Chandler believes that teachers will face more scheduling conflicts.

“Some of the challenges on our end were giving up their lunch periods to accommodate student needs,” Chandler said. “You're having to fit a lot more into those two blocks, rather than those three, I feel like I don't have as much flexibility.”

Roberts believes the new schedule sets him back; the old schedule could be more beneficial for him and his future.

"My grades have been slowly dropping; having to cram up college work and school work has made it really hard for me,” Roberts said. “The day feels so fast, I have to do a lot more work at home instead of in school, and I wish we had the old schedule back.”

A benefit of the new schedule is having only two total instead of four. The new schedule will solve problems with off campus students being confused about what time classes start. Chandler advises students to be patient, as she believes the new schedule could be viewed as controversial.

“You have to ride it out and see what works and what doesn't work," Chandler said. “Anytime you change something, there's gonna be an adjustment area and there's gonna be a growing pain of that.”
