The Rose varsity men’s basketball team went 1-1 this past week with a win over Southern Wayne and a loss to cross-town rival South Central.

In playing South Central on Tuesday, Feb. 16, Rose struggled to take care of the rock. Out of the gate, South Central was putting pressure on the Rose guards forcing costly turnovers. These turnovers led to extra South Central possessions and created a larger deficit as the game went on. Although an ugly loss there were some bright spots; the junior guard duo of Montez Green and Alkevion Waller had 20 points and 15 points respectively.

“Sometimes you think you are ready when you aren't, our guys thought they were ready when they weren't,” Rose coach James Rankins said.

On Thursday, Feb. 18, Rose bounced back with a 86-76 victory over Southern Wayne on senior night.

“It was the seniors last game so we wanted to play hard for [them],” Montez said.

From the start, Rose was shooting the ball very well, taking advantage of the open looks Southern Wayne gave them. This led to an early halftime lead putting pressure on Southern Wayne. In the second half, Rose continued to take advantage of the open looks and maintained

a lead throughout the second half. Southern Wayne would try and create a spark to go on a run in the later quarters, but Rose's offense was too strong for Southern Wayne to handle. The team came out on top with a ten point victory on senior night.

That win was not only special because they won, but also because it was senior night and all of the players wanted to pull through for the seniors and tried to make (them) feel special. There are two seniors: Starter Kevin Hamilton and role player Eddie Powell. After the game, there was a ceremony recognizing their hard work, commitment and motivation to the team for the past years. This was a special night for Rose athletics.
