Sears voices frustration over political discussion at Rose

Mon.| 12-09-24 | OPINION

In light of the election coming to an end, we now have either the second-best or worst president in American history depending on who you ask. Now all I hear at lunch while I’m eating my food is how one candidate is bad and another is better. Can we just accept what it is and get on with our lives? Even before the election began, the only thing that was talked about was political issues.

I’m tired of friends being torn apart just because of their political beliefs and the political commercials. Especially the political commercials. I mean, I don’t want to see an ad about something dealing with the election every five minutes. At first, it wasn’t too bad, but now it’s irritating. All I want to do is watch a game, is that too much to ask for?  All they even do is criticize the other opponent and don't even talk about the things they are planning to do. It´s stupid.

I’m also starting to believe that the commercials influence what people think and as a result of this, they don’t actually take time to go over the pros and cons of the person they are planning to vote for. It used to be that people would support the candidate that won in order to help America, but now America is out of the question and all they care about is being right.

Don’t even get me started on the debates. Those are a whole different level. They are mostly about speaking over each other and not even on politics anymore. That’s what they’re supposed to be about right? The lack of respect is out the window.

Another thing that irks me about all this political nonsense is how students are getting into it now. Why are we so worried about it? We can’t even vote yet and we´re distressed about who's going to run our country? I understand if seventeen and eighteen-year olds are talking about it because they can vote soon, but fourteen and fifteen-year olds have nothing to do with it because we can´t vote.

Most of the time, they don't even know what they’re talking about. They just think what their parents think and don't even do research on their own to try and help America. They take away others' class time in order to talk about nonsense. Some people come to school to learn, not to hear politics.

So, going forward, can we refrain from including politics in any conversation at school? There is a time and place for it, but now that the election is over, there is no need to talk about it. Nobody cares what you think about our leaders. Deal with it, and if you cannot, then that’s your own problem.
