Math teacher Emma Marshburn is the newest addition to Rose’s math department.
Marshburn wants to ensure she can form relationships with her students and create a space where they feel comfortable. She believes this can help clear out some of her student’s negative feelings toward mathematics.
“I really strive to make sure my students know they are seen and they are cared for,” Marshburn said. “I have found that with those relationships comes more engagement because they know that I am not here to just flunk them in the class.”

people. She wants to help her students build valuable life skills while they are in her class.
“I’m teaching responsibility; I’m teaching them how to communicate with me and with each other,” Marshburn said. “I’m pushing my students to be prepared for the real world outside of school.”
In line with this goal, Marshburn wants to help her students transition from middle school to high school math. Marshburn says she has not always been mathematically gifted, however, she is an East Carolina University honors college graduate. She believes that she serves as proof to her students that they can do well in math.
“I understand the struggle of not always understanding,” Marshburn said. “I’m a really firm believer that anybody can be a math person; you just have to be a hard worker.”
Marshburn visited Rose and noticed how the Refresh program could benefit math students. This helped her decide to accept the position teaching Math 1 at Rose over several other open positions at other local high schools.
“When they told me about the refresh program, the other schools in Pitt County didn’t have anything like it,” Marshburn said. “A big thing with math is providing remediation.”
Marshburn can provide opportunities for her students to make up work, correct their errors and get extra help outside of class. She also likes being able to host enrichment refresh sessions where she can form relationships with students outside of her classes.
In addition to Refresh, Marshburn has also found other ways to connect with students outside of class. She has become involved with the Girls for Christ club and helped decorate the freshman hall for homecoming. She hopes to become involved with other student activities in the future.
“I love community building; I love being present,” Marshburn said. “The longer I’m at Rose, the more I’d like to be involved, but for right now I’m starting small.”
