One of Rose’s most well-known and honored faculty members has recently been recognized for his commitment and dedication to the school. On Sept. 25, Rose athletic director Clay Medlin earned the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) Region 1 Athletic Director of the Year Award, also known as the Special Person Award.

Medlin is an alumnus of Rose and East Carolina University (ECU). He started off working part-time at Rose while he was still in college. When he graduated from ECU, a job opened up at Rose, and he has worked here ever since.

Medlin has become an asset to Rose because of all the different roles he plays in the school like being a teacher, coach and athletic director. He has coached multiple sports teams over his time at Rose so far.      Along with the competitive side of golf, the connections and people you get to meet is a big contributor in players' love for the sport.

“I’ve coached baseball for 22 years and I coached football for three a while back, but it’s been a long time,” Medlin said.

Medlin has been an athletic director for seven years, a teacher for 17, and a coach for even longer. Becoming an athletic director has had its ups and downs for Medlin. There are times when the job can be difficult and stressful, however, he really enjoys that the job is surrounded by athletics and sports.

“There’s just a lot of moving parts [and] you have to be very flexible during certain times of the year when it gets more chaotic,” Medlin said. “However it's fun and it's a very sports-based job which I love because I’m a big sports guy and even in the chaotic and troublesome times you're still dealing with athletics.”

Medlin has put a huge amount of effort into ensuring that Rose is represented well, and he has been rewarded for all his hard work.

There are many accomplishments that have been made playing golf at Rose, but West says his biggest by far was winning the state championship his freshman year and strives to get back in that position again this upcoming season.

The NCHSAA rewards individuals from each of the eight regions in North Carolina for those who are dedicated and have devoted at least 10 years to education and athletics. Specifically, the Special Person Award acknowledges people who have made significant contributions to NCHSAA.
Another award that was also acquired was the NCHSAA Wells Fargo Cup. This award was dedicated to Rose’s athletic program all together. It recognized Rose for having the highest athletic performance within 3A schools during the 2023-24 school year.

“All the points from all of the varsity teams added up and this is the first time we've gotten it in six or seven years, so that was a pretty good accomplishment for our school-wide athletic department,” Medlin said.

Although Medlin appreciates the recognition for his hard work, he wants to continue to stay focused and committed to making Rose’s overall education and athletic programs stronger.

Smith plays competitive lacrosse outside of school that helped her get recruited, but she says the impact Rose lacrosse has had on her is unlike any other.

“Nothing really changes in day-to-day life but it's always nice to get recognized if you've done something that you feel like you've done pretty well,” Medlin said.
