Howard takes on the 'Nailed It' challenge

MON. | 12-12-22 | FEATURES

I took on the Christmas Nailed It Challenge while having no idea how to make a cake, nor have I ever seen anyone make a cake before. I thought “How hard can it be?”

First, I went to the store to get all the ingredients I needed to make the cake. I wanted to make the cake red for Christmas, so I picked out a strawberry flavored cake, which would make the cake red.

When I got home from the store, I found all the supplies I needed to make the cake. I followed the exact instructions on the box and the cakes came out of the oven

after 45 minutes. I did not know what the cakes were supposed to look like out of the oven, but it looked fine to me. Then I let the cakes cool for around an hour and started icing. The icing was the hardest part for me because I had a problem with smoothing out the cake when trying to put the icing on. Then I found this tool that spins the plate around, which helped me smooth the icing around the cake.

The last part was to actually decorate the cake which was hard because I had no clue how to work the tool that made the shapes on the cake. But after a couple of youtube videos, I felt like I had mastered it. So when I went to decorate the cake, I put the stars on top and around the cake, which was really easy. Then, I had to decorate the roses and I had the tools to make them but when I tried to do it on the cake, the icing did not come out as roses. So I tried my best on the rest of decorating the cake, which included trying to figure out how to make antlers for my cake. I ended up using pretzels because I could not figure out how to make the chocolate antlers. Then when I was done, I took some pictures with the cake and put it in the freezer for the next day.

The next day I ended up having the cake that looked the most similar to the picture, which was the goal of the competition, and somehow I ended up coming in second because Mrs. Hutch did not like the artificial strawberry taste of my cake. I thought that I was being creative by having something different. I personally think that is biased, but I can’t argue with the judge. In all, I was happy with the product I made and hoped it looked and tasted good from all the work I put into it.
