Along with a global pandemic and many other events that have changed the way the world will continue to live, we have also suffered the loss of many famous faces throughout 2020.

Early in the year, on January 26, 2020, the world lost a basketball icon for many, Kobe Bean Bryant. Bryant was on his way to his daughter’s youth basketball tournament with her alongside in the helicopter when it hit a slope. There were nine people on board and all of them were killed in the crash, including Bryant and his daughter Gianna.

“Everything negative - pressure, challenges - is all an opportunity for me to rise,” Bryant once said.

Bryant was an American professional basketball player who spent his entire career playing for the Los Angeles Lakers. He was not only one of the greatest players of his generation with five NBA championship wins, but also was well known for the amount of time he spent inspiring young players to chase their dreams.

Later in the year, on August 28, 2020, the world lost yet another icon. After fighting a four year battle against colon cancer, Boseman passed away at age 43. Actor Chadwick Boseman made one of his biggest breakthroughs on TV screens around the world in the award winning film “42”, playing Jackie Robinson. He then was cast in the groundbreaking Marvel film, “Black Panther” with the role of T’Challa.

Boseman was well known for his fight for racial equality, he strived to be cast as the black American icon roles he was given

and is a role model to many around the world. Along with striving for these iconic roles, Boseman was also a Black Lives Matter movement advocate.

“The struggles along the way are only meant to shape you for your purpose,” Boseman once said.

Eddie Van Halen was another loss this year causing grief among many American rock fans. Songwriter and lead guitarist for his American rock band, Van Halen, passed away on October 6, 2020 due to throat cancer. Out of the 16 albums Van Halen produced in his career, 14 were in the top 10 music charts. Even after his passing, he had music being streamed 31 million times in that month, fans have been streaming his music more than ever before.

Van Halen was well known for his carefree outlook on life, by creating fun and exciting music for his fans to listen to he was able to deliver this message across the globe.

Bryant, Boseman and Van Halen were role models to many and have one major trait in common, their ability to turn a negative situation into a positive one. The losses have brought much grief all around the world and even to many in the Rose community.
