Trump tears Constitution

WED.| 05-14-25 | OPINION

In 2025, President Donald Trump took office for a second term, with Vice President (V.P.) J.D. Vance. The Trump administration has started off the first four months of this year with over 77 executive orders and foreign tariffs on countries around the world. In the United States Constitution, there are no executive orders listed in the president's powers, however Trump has continued to overstep these laws.

Trump has recently released a statement about the idea of running for a third term because of a possible loophole he discovered in the 22nd Amendment, where he could let the current V.P. Vance ran for presidency and Trump would run as his V.P., Vance would then resign leaving Trump to take over. In international politics, there have been several instances where something similar has occurred. Specifically, Vladimir Putin who has essentially been ruling over Russia since 2000. Putin amended the constitution several times in order to stay in power and maintain his almost authoritarian rule over Russia. Many Americans, along with myself, are fearful that by Trump trying to find loopholes and amend the Constitution, he is doing the same thing as Putin. There is no doubt that Trump wants to keep power for as long as he can, but I believe he wants to keep democracy at the heart of our country.

A main point of The Trump administration's campaign was democracy, they advertised that rights of every American citizen would be upheld, and we would continue to be a country that was free and prosperous. I do believe that through other areas of Trump's plan like the immigration policies, and increasing domestic imports will greatly benefit our country, however if he ran for a third term it would be strung out over a long period of time. This could then be used as an excuse for Trump if things are not happening as quickly as he would want them to. Trump running for a third term is not following democracy, but most of his policies want to protect American citizens and America as a whole.

Another concern is Trump's age, he is 78 years old and by the time he supposedly leaves his second term, he will be 82. As a result, age comes more health risks and leads to citizens questioning his ability to properly run the country. People questioned former President Joe Biden, because  he was fighting against old age and beginning to show symptoms of dementia. Just based on his age, he shouldn’t run for a third term. I wouldn’t trust someone who is 82 years old to run a country and keep it thriving.

While Trump running for a third term goes against the constitution, there is a possibility he may just run for president anyway. This would cause a lot of uproar in America because the backbone of our country is democracy and protecting the rights of the people. Many citizens, along with myself, will be upset with President Trump that he is going against the things he says he stands for. Additionally, large supporters of the Trump administration have spoken about adding another amendment all together instead of going through the “loophole” in the 22nd amendment. This raises many questions about what role the Constitution plays if new amendments can cancel out existing ones, but this makes no logical sense because this could just continue happening with other foundational rights Americans have.
