Senior Carys Carson recently worked her way to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 6A Individual Women’s State Championship. She is one of only two girls on the Rose girls' golf team.
Carson started playing golf at five years old, and has not stopped since.
“My dad was really into golf and he would take me with him,” Carson said. “He would give me candy and a wedge and tell me to go play.”
The golf team looked a little different for Carson this year, due to their lower numbers. The previous three years, Rose has had a full team, qualifying them for team scoring matches.

“For scoring you're not taking a full team to matches anymore and you're not getting points for a team,” Carson said. “It takes away your opportunity to have more people qualify for regionals and states.”
Women's golf coach Liz Barbee said having two players can be a bad thing, but she tries to take the positives from it.
“When it’s just two players it’s actually better because we can focus in on what those players need to work on individually,” Barbee said.
The State Championship format for the individual girls is two 18 hole rounds but, due to rain the format changed. The first day consisted of 15 holes before getting called off due to weather. The following day Carson finished those three holes, ending her round off with an 86. She finished off by playing nine holes. Carson shot a 43 on the nine to close out her State Championship. She was ultimately satisfied with how she performed at states.
“Considering how terrible the weather was, I shot 41, 45, and 43," Carson said. “I was happy with that because my club was falling out of my hand with the rain.”
Carson finished 16th in the women's individual golf state championship overall. Getting to states was not easy, going through ups and downs in regionals and states.
“Regionals were a little rocky, my first nine holes was not good and my second nine holes was really good,” Carson said. “I scored pretty well overall.”
Even through the adversity, Carson still enjoyed her time on the course and found a way to play well.
“I had a lot of fun, I tried to work on my mental game and just play and not let [the weather] get in my way,” Carson said. “I realized it's not gonna stop so I might as well play through it.”
Carson credits Barbee for her success and helping her keep her mental game under control.
“Coach Barbee has always supported me; she's always been so flexible and helpful,” Carson said. “I really appreciate her willingness to let me be on the team even when I can't be there, and her constant support.”
Barbee says that Carson has set a standard for rose golf. She hopes new players will follow after Carson.
“Cary’s has definitely set a standard for rose women’s golf for what it should look like and what you should do,” Barbee said. “As a teammate she challenges her teammates, she leads by example and sets the standard.”
Overall, the year for Carson operated different than past years, but she found a way to take away positives from her final senior season.
“I was happy with this year because my scores might not have been my favorite, but my swing has improved so much from last year,” Carson said. “I’ve been working on some swing thoughts that really helped me.”
