Counselor Lori Bowen was welcomed to the Rose student services team for the new school year.

The new counseling position at Rose was filled over the summer after the former counselor, Pamela Williamson, retired last year. Bowen has degrees from North Carolina State University, the University of Southern Mississippi, and the University of North Carolina Charlotte. She has had 11 years of experience as a counselor and believes that she is fully qualified to fill the position at Rose and lead her students in the right direction.

“I love being at Rose, I’m super excited and I’m looking forward to the school year,” Bowen said.

Bowen has been a counselor at several different school such as Lake Forest Elementary and Farmville Middle School. She first looked at Rose after hearing about the school’s opening position as a school counselor. She believed she was prepared for the position when she found out she was being a counselor who works with students with the last name Sn-Z.

“{Rose Has} have a great reputation, and the counselors here are phenomenal,” Bowen said. “This is one of the only schools I know of where they have five counselors and historically all five of them have been National Board Certified, so it’s a great place to be.”

Although Bowen believes Rose has a supportive staff, she knows there are going to be a lot of challenges she will have to face. One of the challenges Bowen faced during her first weeks at Rose was adjusting to the environment and preparing for the school year.

“I was not prepared for how many change requests there would be,” Bowen said.

Thanks to the staff at Rose, Bowen has started to overcome the challenges that go along with becoming a high school counselor. She believes she knows how to handle managing course change requests with other duties for future school years.

“I have some ideas about always trying to better yourself and how to manage that next year,” Bowen said.

Bowen wants to lead her students in the right direction that best fits their desires and their personality. When she was in high school, she had a lot of friends that struggled during their high school years. Bowen wants to be the counselor where her students feel safe and welcomed when they need her so that they can have the best high school experience.

“I just want to help support students that really do struggle with a lot of different things,” Bowen said. “This is an exciting thing to sit down with somebody and talk about your future and your plans and what you want to do with your life as an adult.”
